Changes
Buff’s Potions makes some changes to existing Vanilla mechanics for rebalancing and common sense. Most of these are small, but it is recommended you read through this so as to not be blindsided by any of them.
Cauldrons
A Cauldron with any amount of water acts as an endless water source for filling bottles and Flagons. Dispensers can use them to fill bottles and Flagons as well. Put a Cauldron in your brewing room instead of a watery hole in the ground! This also facilitates true Nether brewing.
Using a non-empty bottle or Flagon on a water cauldron empties their contents, destroying it.
Armor Stands
Armor Stands can now be named with Name Tags.
Right-clicking an armor stand with a stick will give it arms, which can hold items.
Sneak-right-clicking an armor stand cycles through thirteen poses. When a redstone signal beside the stand changes, its strength picks the pose.
Potion Effects
As potion effects can scale to potency IV in survival now, some rebalancing was necessary:
| Effect | I | II | III | IV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swiftness | +32% speed | +64% | +128% | +256% |
| Slowness | −22% speed | −44% | −66% | −88% |
| Strength | +3 damage | +5 | +7 | +9 |
| Weakness | −3 damage | −5 | −7 | −9 |
| Instant Health | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
| Instant Damage | 6 | 8 | 10 | 12 |
| Regeneration | 2.5s | 1.25s | 0.85s | 0.65s |
| Poison | 1.25s | 1s | 0.7s | 0.45s |
Furthermore, extending a potion with Redstone Dust now doubles it regardless of duration. This is a nerf, but it is balanced by the ability to hold nine doses in one belt or flagon, and makes the math simpler.
Turtle Master is Slowness I and Resistance I for (01:00), and improves like any other potion.
Brewing Recipes
Poison is now brewed with a Poisonous Potato instead of a Spider Eye, which already finds ample use in the brewng room.
Weakness potions can no longer be brewed from water directly, requiring an Awkward Potion instead. This is because Mundane Potions of Weakness can be made in the Still using just Redstone Dust, so the player can still cleanse Zombified Villagers early-game.
Glowstone dust in a water bottle brews a Mundane Potion. The Thick Potion is removed from the creative inventory.
Invisibility
Invisibility II now hides worn armor. Level III also hides the held item. Level IV also hides the effect particles and the footprints from sprinting.
Luck and Bad Luck
Luck I doubles the chance that food tames an animal. Luck II guarantees taming an animal on the first try. Bad Luck I and II make those chances a half and a quarter.
When a player with Luck I breeds two animals, there is a 20% chance for it to produce twins, and Luck II gives a 20% chance for quadruplets. Bad Luck I gives a 20 % chance for no offspring to be bron. Bad Luck II gives a 20% chance for the offspring to be a Vex instead.
The chance to get a blue Axolotl is raised to 1 in 800 with Luck I and 1 in 600 with Luck II, from the usual 1 in 1200.
Luck raises the floor of a critical arrow’s bonus, increasing average damage, and Bad Luck lowers the ceiling, decreasing average damage. Level I cuts a quarter off that range. Level II cuts off half. Both can apply at once.
Bad Luck I raises the chance to get a Poisonous Potato from 2% to 4%, and Bad Luck II raises it to 8%.
A cat’s morning gift changes if the player has Luck or Bad Luck. Luck makes a Phantom Membrane thrice as common and adds a chance for a Wing. Bad Luck might have the cat bring an Endermite, and Bad Luck II a Pufferfish.
A player with Luck might find more Chickens than they expect hatching from an egg. A player with Bad Luck might find something…else.
When both Luck and Bad Luck are present, the higher level wins. Any potency past II counts as II.
Brewing Stand
The brewing stand has a recipe book now, split into helpful effects, harmful effects, essence effects, and utility recipes.
Just like the Still and Stack recipe books, a recipe is added once its ingredient has been picked up or crafted. Until a potion of that effect has been held, the result is shown as the ingredient and a question mark, with the label “New Potion?”.
Shift-clicking into a Brewing Stand fills a bottle slot before the Blaze Powder, and the Blaze Powder before the ingredient slot.
Witches
A witch at full health throws a Splash Potion of Confounding when at full health and the player is within three blocks. Otherwise, one throw in five is Confounding, and the rest are her usual potions.
Loot
Dungeon chests, Decorated Pots, and Fishing loot tables now have extra potions in them.
Ancient cities have a new roll for an Incarnation potion of a random passive mob.
Villagers
A novice Cleric also has a chance to buy a Suspicious Brew for an Emerald. An apprentice has a chance to sell two Gunpowder for an Emerald. A journeyman might buy a honey bottle for an Emerald. Each of those trades can be used four times.
A wandering trader can sell an empty Flagon for seven Emeralds, or one Potion of Flower Walking for five Emeralds.
Honey
Drinking a honey bottle restores twice the usual saturation.
Beacons
A level 3 beacon can grant Reaching. A level 4 beacon can grant Stoppered.
